Eating Healthy on a College Budget
Eating healthy on a college budget can be very difficult. I am in my junior year of college and I still struggle to find healthy and nutritional meals on campus, in dining halls, and even at home. Eating healthy can be expensive, but there any many ways you can reduce the costs without sacrificing your health.
Oats
Oats are a great source of fiber, good for your heart, and help keep you full and energized. They are also not expensive it is $3 at target for a 42oz container of oats.
Coconut Water
Coconut water is a great source of electrolytes and vitamins. When you are in college it does not take much to make you feel run down and exhausted. Coconut water can be a great and simple fix. At Fresh Thyme you can buy an 8 pack of pure coconut water for only $10.
Frozen Fruit
Frozen fruit is a great alternative to buy fresh produce if you are looking to save some money. It is much easier to store and it does not go bad as fast as fresh fruit. You can use this fruit in smoothies, yogurt, or oats! At Walmart, you can buy a 3lb bag of frozen blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries for only $8.47.
Brown Rice & Quinoa
Brown Rice and Quinoa are great healthy fibers to add to any meal especially lunch or dinner. You can buy these in bulk and cook them yourself as needed. At Walmart, you can buy a 3lb bag or brown rice for only $3.32. That quantity of rice will last you a long time while also providing you with a filling and healthy base for a meal.
Nut Butter
Almond butter, peanut butter, or sunflower butter are all great sources of natural protein that can easily be incorporated into your diet. Make sure you reach for the natural nut butter not the processed ones with gums and fillers. At Walmart, you can buy a 16oz container of all-natural peanut butter for only $2.98.
Remember to eat everything in moderation these products are not a cure-all for a healthy diet. These are just a few great tricks I have found over my years at college!
